Social Security Disability

Social Security Disability (SSD) is an entitlement benefit. This means that, while you work, you have paid taxes into a fund that will be available to you, should you become disabled and can no longer work. In order to be eligible for SSD, your work history and medical records must meet certain qualifications, and a judge must determine that there is no job you can perform in light of your disability. Some judges are incredibly protective of the Social Security fund and all but refuse to award anyone the benefits they deserve. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a different kind of federal benefit available only to the most indigent. It is not necessary that you have an extensive work history (or any at all) to be eligible for SSI, but only that you are currently unable to work due to a disability and that you cannot provide for your own basic necessities, such as food, shelter and clothing.
